Alsherok: Awakening (On Hold)

Status: On Hold

The short description: 3D transformation of an old MUD that went by the name of Alsherok

The long description Alsherok was a MUD I played and did some work on many, many, many, many (+ some more) years ago. I met some interesting people and made some long-lasting friendships out of the whole deal. There were a lot of awesome hand-crafted areas there, but they were represented purely by text. Although text does let you fill in the blanks with imagination, I think it would be interesting to do some of that translation and re-imagine the world in 3-D with up-to-date graphics built to be cross-platform so that anyone can pick it up and enjoy. While some core features may have to change in the move from text to 3D, hopefully I can keep some of the look-n-feel and spirit. I have sign-off from most all of the copyright holders to use their work, so I am just waiting on a couple more confirmations before delving much further into this rabbit hole working on collecting the data and determining the work involved.

Update: I collected the data I needed, parsed out the text files into a PostgreSQL database, and started spec’ing out the work. Unfortunately, the other developer that would act as a high level counterbalance had life come up and wasn’t able to continue with the project and I put it on hold indefinitely.

Update: I have decided to make the arena the first step in bringing this world to life. As such, I will use the data I collected as part of the original parsing of text files and gathering information on the old world as a basis for what is available in the arena, with the expectation that this will be but one small step in the eventual recreation of the world as a whole.
